Is It Crazy to Job Search in a New Industry?

Is it crazy to job search in a new industry?

Absolutely. But crazy isn’t necessarily a bad thing—it’s often where the magic starts. In this episode of ASK AN EXPERT, you’ll hear from two Barrett Group experts who agree that some of the best moves in life begin with a leap into the unknown.

Waffles Natusch lays it out: if you’re mid-career and craving change, there’s a reason for that—and a strategy to match. Dan Resendes digs deeper, revealing how understanding your evolving values can lead to a more fulfilling future.

So, is it a crazy idea? Maybe. Is it worth exploring? Definitely. Let’s dive in!

Waffles Natusch:Is it a crazy idea? YES! And the world is built on crazy ideas.

And, as an example and an extension of that, if you graduated college in June of this year, you are going to have (crazy idea!) four to five separate careers. That’s the way our society has completely fallen apart…for the good, probably.

Now, that said, we’re in the middle of our career, and we want to make a change. That is why you hire the Barrett group. We are careerchange.com. That’s what we do!

You’re in the middle of your career, and want to make a change. That is why you hire the Barrett group. That’s what we do!

Now, is it the best move for you today? We’ve got to talk about that!

It might be an absolutely, necessary move. You might have no choice. Or it might be well, you know, I want to give back. Okay, well, there are ways you can give back, and we can explore that.

What does it mean money-wise? That depends! We have that conversation. Sometimes those conversations are brief. Other times it it sets the tone for our entire campaign together.

Dan Resendes: Great answer, Waffles!

I think it’s a novel idea. I think, that a lot of executives who are busy at work driving initiatives, being leaders, employ the best data analysis tools, employ the best talent, to make sure that their initiatives are successful.

But then, when it comes to their own career and they take a look back at what they’ve been doing, a lot of times they started that first job and they went on their career path for really crazy reasons.

They got they got their first job because they knew somebody. And then they were always told that, you know, they were good with this or that. So, then they went down that path. And they find themselves, you know, maybe after working 15, 20, 25 years…just not fulfilled in life. And they kind of wonder why.

We collaborate with clients to explore which industries and organizations would be salivating over wanting to hire them!

One of the things that we do at The Barrett Group is to go in and do an analysis. We have a proven way of taking a look at a person’s personality. What they truly enjoy in life. And not just looking at it in a one-time snapshot, but how their values, and how their vision and mission, and how their ethics have evolved over the course of their lives. We look at how different life events have changed what’s important to them as it exists today in this current year.

We look forward to what’s truly going to make them happy for the next 5, 10 or 15 years. And we help them to make sure that they can understand why they’re happy, or why they’re unhappy — and what, exactly, will make them happy moving forward.

We will do some data analysis and collaborate with them. So that not only can we answer the question of whether or not they should explore changing industries or even changing job functions, but exactly what industries would be open to their transferable skills, and – far beyond open – which industries and what specific organizations within those industries would be salivating over wanting to hire them!
