Job Opportunities Still Available for Executives and Senior Management Professionals, Trick is Knowing Where to Look

Warwick, R.I. – October 3, 2008 – Nearly 160,000 Americans lost their jobs in September, according to a report released today by the U.S. Department of Labor. The report cited that the construction, manufacturing and retail sectors were hit particularly the hardest. However, those executives and senior management who proved victims of the latest round of company layoffs should take solace in the fact that job opportunities do exist, even with the continued downward spiral on Wall Street.

“It’s a challenging time, but it’s not a bad time,” said Waffles P. Natusch, president of The Barrett Group, LLC, which provides career management consulting for executives and other professionals. “It is obvious to anyone that certain sectors are contracting, such as the financial services, real estate and automotive markets. However, the opportunities are still out there, the trick is knowing how to find them.” As one example of a silver lining, Natusch pointed out that while the automotive industry has faced major losses in recent months, especially General Motors, car companies like KIA (Korean International Automobile) are growing. The Barrett Group recently positioned a senior executive for an interview at KIA, which has constructed a $1.2 billion assembly plant in western Georgia that is scheduled to reach full production by 2009. Other Barrett Group clients have landed in senior positions within the non-profit and consumer goods sectors in recent months.

Among the sectors that remain solid include transportation and logistics, healthcare, biotechnology, green technology and higher education. “If you’re a senior professional who has achieved tenure within an industry that has continued to contract, the time has come to consider seeking a comparable position within a growing industry or even a career change,” said Natusch. “There are a number of ways to position your personal strengths and professional experience so that you can land into a similar position within a totally different sector. It is a process that can be done and has been done by thousands of seasoned professionals before you.”
