More Americans Hit The Job Trail
Warwick, R.I. – September 30, 2008 – Features writer Marilyn Gardner of the Christian Science Monitor yesterday reported that nearly 700,000 more Americans are on the job hunt this year, with an article highlighting several ways professionals are trying to make themselves standout to prospective employers. The story also highlighted how the landscape of the employment market has changed dramatically in the last five to 10 years, placing several long-employed executives and senior professionals at a disadvantage during the job search process. Most applications, for example, are completed and submitted electronically via company Websites. Even networking is done electronically thanks to the likes of Internet sites such as LinkedIn.
Gardiner also sought comment from The Barrett Group President Waffles P. Natusch who pointed out that one job search tactic – mass mailings of résumés – has lost its effectiveness. “It’s good for executive or senior job seekers to join and have an active presence within online networks such as LinkedIn,” said Natusch. “It shows that you’re tech savvy and connected, and it is also a very effective professional networking tool. Where professionals go wrong is when they resort to the old method of mass mailing a résumé or turning it into a handout at job fairs … it gives the perception that you’re desperate, and that’s not the first impression you want to create for yourself.”
